The Armed Services Veterans Band will be updating this photo on May 1st, 2024, when we open the Congaree New Horizons Band Concert, the Spring Concert, at the USC SOM Recital Hall in Columbia, SC. The event will span two nights to accommodate the many ensembles featured, including the Trombone Ensemble, a new addition this year to the CNHB. Following the ASVB's performance, two of us, both veterans, will be playing with them.
I want to give another shout-out to Dr. Roy Ernst, the founder of the New Horizons International Music Association, as well as to Dr. Mandi Schlegel, Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Education and Director of the CNHB program. Your visions, dedication, and the hard work that went into establishing the NHB program, particularly this band for veterans, are deeply appreciated.
Today, during rehearsal, a tangible affirmation of the band's impact occurred. I've often said that this band fills the void left by my time serving as an Army Bandmaster—a role I dearly miss and cherished as my life's work for over 17 years. I reiterated this sentiment to the group today, emphasizing their importance to me. In response, another veteran, also from the Army Band, passionately agreed, saying, "I need this. I really need this!" Many others nodded in agreement.
Our efforts transcend simply creating great music. It's about camaraderie—sharing the narratives of our service, the triumphs, and the struggles, and in some cases, finding healing, sometimes from personal loss. That's the mission of the Armed Services Veterans Band. Music is our medium for healing and joy. Again, it makes my heart sing! WHOO-AAH!
The Armed Services Veterans Band recently wrapped up their first season with an exhilarating concert in Columbia, SC, showcasing the same vibrant energy as their Veterans Day debut. The 30-member ensemble, known for their musical versatility, will continue rehearsals post-Memorial Day and conclude the season with a National Anthem performance at a Columbia Fireflies game. This season finale event promises to be a festive occasion with community appreciation and live music at Segra Park.
